ICPC, CRIVIFON urge participation in advocacy against graft, rights violation

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has called on stakeholders to do all it takes to revive the lost societal values in the country and promote moral regeneration.

This was as the Crime Victims Foundation Nigeria (CRIVIFON) appealed for partnership with security agencies and other stakeholders in promoting a society free of human rights abuses.

At CRIVIFON’s Human Rights Summit in Lagos, yesterday, themed ‘Strengthening Human Rights Advocacy’, Mrs. Mary Omonoyan of ICPC’s Public Enlightenment and Education Department, said all hands must be on deck to build a corruption-free society.

In her lecture entitled, ‘Fighting Corruption through Advocacy: the ICPC Experience’, Mrs. Omonoyan urged all to cultivate the courage to be positively different.

“We must all cultivate the courage necessary to speak up against corruption, to take up the battle-cry and say no to corruption and participate in advocacy against corruption,” she added.

The Executive Director of CRIVIFON, Mrs. Gloria Egbuji, in her address, noted that the foundation was the first non-governmental organisation to introduce Gender Desk at police stations, which helps immeasurably in the improvement of policing.

Represented at the event by CRIVIFON’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Frank Oshanugor, the ED disclosed that the foundation has trained over 25,000 law enforcement officials, including police, army and civil defence, on human rights and rule of law.

According to Mrs. Adebola Amodu from the Office of the Public Defender (OPD), justice and fundamental human rights thrive when the rule of law are upheld.

The police, officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and Lagos State Traffic management Agency (LASTMA) all delivered lectures at the event, which culminated in the graduation of 35 students from Course 21 of CRIVIFON’s Human Rights Education Centre in Lagos.
