Percy Jackson Series To Use Stagecraft

The Disney+ series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is taking a page out of the “Star Wars” TV series playbook by using virtual production.

The 20th Television series, based on Rick Riordan’s best-selling novels, has begun production in Vancouver. It will be the first project to be made with ILM’s newly-built StageCraft LED stage at the Canadian west coast facility – a ‘Volume’ stage that features a 95-ft. LED screen for backgrounds.

The StageCraft tech came to prominence with “The Mandalorian,” using the Unreal game engine and camera parallax tricks to create photorealistic and dynamic renderings of scene backgrounds on a 360-degree wall of LED screens – effectively replacing green screens. It has since been used in a number of series and films including “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “The Batman,” and “Our Flag Means Death”.

The Vancouver stage marks ILM’s fifth permanent StageCraft volume following the three in Los Angeles (two at Manhattan Beach and one in Burbank) and a fourth at Pinewood Studios in London. A temporary one was built in Sydney, Australia for the production of “Thor: Love and Thunder”.
