The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police booked 81 officials and staff members of the Rohini jail on corruption charges. They were booked for taking bribes of about Rs 1.5 crore per month from conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar.
This comes after eight jail officials were arrested for allegedly helping jailed conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar extort Rs 200 crore from the wife of former Fortis Healthcare promoter Shivinder Singh.
The EOW has been awaiting approval from the Delhi jail administration for the past six months to initiate a probe against the officials.
The police booked Rohini jail staff after investigations revealed that Chandrashekhar distributed Rs 1.5 crore bribes to the jail staff every month for getting facilities to use mobile phones and a separate barrack without any hindrance.
“Sukesh was paying Rs 1.5 crore every month for getting facilities to use mobile phones and a separate barrack without any hindrance. Based on documents, facts and evidence collected during the probe, it came to the fore that the money was paid to all staff, irrespective of their duties, as a bribe to ensure they remain silent,” the FIR stated.
After the matter came to light, 10 CCTV cameras of the jail were confiscated and scanned, through which the complicity of the jail staff was discovered.
